Editors’ picks: our favourite Booker Prize-winning books
With the 2024 Booker Prize ceremony just around the corner, the team here at Booker HQ have been asking ourselves: what’s our all-time favourite Booker Prize-winning novel? For some, it’s a bona fide classic – a book which has truly stood the test of time. Others lean towards recent winners; books with themes that feel especially resonant and speak to the challenges of our current world. Here, we reflect on a few of our favourites from years gone by. Which one would you choose?
Nine of the steamiest reads from the Booker Library
As a genre, romance can get a bad rap. Often dismissed as fluff or – worse! – smut, it may conjure memories of swoon-worthy book covers of yesteryear, which promised bored housewives bodice-ripping titillation and happily-ever-afters. But recently, romantic fiction and erotica have had a long-overdue makeover, and sales have skyrocketed. Younger readers especially are unashamedly turning to steamy reads for escapism – and the spicier, the better. With this mind, we’ve delved into the Booker archive in search of the steamiest books that have been nominated for our prizes. Discover what’s on the list, here.
And finally…
We're excited to announce PEN Presents x International Booker Prize, a new initiative offering grants to support literary translators from the Global Majority in bringing their work to editors and readers. If you’re a translator or just curious to learn more, you can read our article, here.
Plus, this year’s shortlist has had a makeover – Fellows from the Designer Bookbinders society have crafted unique, hand-bound editions of each of the six books, which will be presented to the shortlisted authors at our ceremony. The book the world needs to read is Orbital. This is the perspective we must share...otherwise I'm afraid our beautiful blue dot will be lost and so will we. We all know this . Her writing is just superb: a new space lyricism, a love poem , a kind humanity.
Orbital is a novel that takes realism's engagement with time and space to new heights ( literally and figuratively). Its lyrical prose offers a perspective on how we are tied to each other on earth across borders in profound ways, and offers us a planetary perspective of existence, which the 21st century needs. A rich new addition to all those "day in the life of" novels. My favored winner
-- a work of originality, wisdom, and beauty.
