The 'timely and timeless’ longlist features three debut novels alongside international bestselling authors and six writers previously nominated for the prize
So delighted to see Wild Houses on this list. I am an Irish reader and really admire Colin's work. I have Messud Orange and Everett on my bookshelf ready to be read. Need to explore some of the female writers on the long list too as their books sound intriguing.
So glad to see Wandering Stars and James on the list - will be reading the entire Longlist, but these will be hard to top. Thank you for a diverse reading experience.
James by Percival Everett is still the best book I've read this year! Looking forward to whatever Mr. Everett writes next. Also looking forward to reading several of the books on this Long List that I haven't read yet.
The list is very heavily weighted towards North America, with five United Ststes authors, and themes that seem to mostly share a specific political and regional perspective on current affairs.
I really prefer a mix of writers from around the world, and that definitely includes Grest Britain and the entire Commonwealth, many of whom don't get the kind of publicity that major newspaper reviews in the U.S. or the U.K are willing to provide.
Thx for your encouragement, Jean. Two Canadians made the Longlist…Anne Michaels with “Held” (fabulous) and Claire Messud with “The Strange Eventful History” (lots of rave reviews) so we’re really proud and hoping they move onto the shortlist. I love almost everything I read from Ireland and Northern Ireland but “Wild Houses” but it was a bit too rough and reminded me a bit too much of university in the ‘70’s… I tried it but I’m going to stay away, ha!
Looking forward to making their acquaintance! High regard for many of your Booker winners -- Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Yann Martel, and Michael Ondaatje! Great fiction coming out of Canada!

Thanks, Lucy! Yes there is a lot of love for Colin's work. We're glad we've given you a few more books to add to your TBR pile, too!

I’ve read James and Wandering Stars and am glad to see them on the long list! All the others will be on my TBR list!
Great choices Anna! Glad the others are making it to your list
Loved Orbital. Happy to see it on the longlist.
